Overview

Your site's domain is like its street address; it lets other people find it. Setting up your site domain is very important in making sure that people can visit your site.

Getting Started

For your site to show up at any domain, you first need to publish it.

Choosing a Default Domain

While publishing your site, you'll be asked to choose a domain, or to change your site address. This option lets you set the default domain for your site, which means it'll let you choose a website address with a generic domain so you can publish your site live immediately.

Customizing your Domain

To fully customize domain, your site needs to be published. Once you've published, you can choose the custom domain you want to use in the Site Settings area:

  1. Click "Site URL & Secure Connection".

  2. Click "Change Site Address".

  3. Click "Use a domain you already own".

  4. Enter the URL of the domain you already own (include www before the domain name).

  5. Click Save.

After setting up your domain in Maisey, you will need to set up your DNS settings through your domain host. In order to do this, you will need admin access to the domain which you intend to use. In your domain host you will need to create 2 A records and a CNAME record.

Note: Some domain hosts will not allow you to set up multiple records for the @ domain. If this is the case for your domain host, then simply add one record for the @ domain and include both IP’s.

Here is an example from Google Domains, in which they use one A record with two IP's:

Here is an example from Godaddy, in which they use two A records (one for each IP):

Use the following information for the CNAME record and A records:

CNAME

  • Host: www

  • Points to: s.multiscreensite.com

A Records

  • First A Record:

    • Host/Alias: @

    • Target/Destination: 35.172.94.1

  • Second A Record:

    • Host/Alias: @

    • Target/Destination: 100.24.208.97

Two A Records are used for server balance and redundancy.

Note

If you previously took your site live with instructions involving a 301 Redirect and CNAME, you will need to re-create your SSL certificate. For more information, see Add SSL or HTTPS. In addition, you will need to remove the previous settings for the 301 Redirect.

Adding AAAA and CAA records prevents issuing an SSL certificate. Please ensure you do not have these records configured.

Most domain hosts have instructions for this in their help centers, but if they do not, you can ask your domain host:

"Can you please / How can I create a CNAME record for my domain with the values:
host: www
domain: s.multiscreensite.com
and also can you please / how can I create a 301 redirect from the base domain (without a www) to the www domain (www.yourdomain.com) URL so that my visitors are sent there appropriately."

Set up your Domain in your Domain Host

If you opt to use the Default Domain or to Purchase a new domain for your site, you do not need to set up your domain with your domain host.

If you choose to use a domain you already own, after setting up your domain in Maisey, complete the following:

  1. To connect your domain to your site, click Continue.

  2. Maisey searches for your domain host provider, and prompts you to log in with your provider (for example, GoDaddy).

  3. Type your login credentials for your domain host provider, and click Continue.

    • Alternatively, if you do not own the login credentials, click Forward login to a colleague. Copy the link provided and send to a colleague to complete the setup.

  4. You will receive a confirmation message that your domain is now configured. Click Done.

Note

  • Changes to your domain typically take less than a few hours to go live. However, it may take up to 48 hours.

  • If a domain isn't using the registrars default name servers, Maisey may not be able to correctly add the records.

If your domain host can't create a 301 redirect

If your domain host does not have the ability to create 301 redirects, we have a workaround you can use instead.

Create an A record with the values:
host: @
ip: 54.164.82.77

Please note that this workaround will not work for sites with HTTPS, so if you need your site to have HTTPS, you will need to make sure your domain host can create a 301 redirect.

I've followed these steps but my site still isn't live!

CNAMEs can take up to 48 hours to propagate, so your website will not usually show up immediately at its custom domain. Generally if your site isn't showing up after 24 hours, however, something is probably wrong. To figure out what's going on,

  1. Go to https://www.whatsmydns.net/#CNAME/ and enter your site's full address (with www) into the text area, then click Search.

  2. If you see red X's, or do not see s.multiscreensite.com to the right of each location, this means that either the CNAME record was not set up correctly or the domain host is not propagating.

  3. First, check that the CNAME is set up using the instructions under the customizing your domain section.

  4. Take care to check whether the domain host you set up this CNAME in is actually hosting your domain; in some cases a domain host will let you set up records even though they aren't hosting the domain.

  5. If everything is set up correctly and you've waited 24 hours, but your site is not showing, please contact your domain host for more information.
